Dibenzoyl Methane (DBM) is widely used as a co-stabilizer in the production of PVC.
Key applications and benefits of DBM in PVC formulations are as follows:
- Heat Stabilization: DBM is primarily used in combination with metal-based stabilizers (such as calcium-zinc or tin stabilizers) to enhance the thermal stability of PVC during processing and in end-use applications. It helps to minimize discoloration caused by heat degradation.
- Color Stabilization: DBM acts as a chelating agent, scavenging hydrogen chloride (HCl) released during the degradation of PVC. This reduces the yellowing or blackening of PVC and maintains the desired color of the product over time.
- Enhanced UV Resistance: DBM improves the resistance of PVC to UV radiation by stabilizing the polymer chains against photo-oxidative degradation. This is particularly important in outdoor applications.
- Reduction of Heavy Metal Stabilizers: DBM enables partial replacement of traditional heavy metal stabilizers like lead or cadmium, aligning with global trends toward environmentally friendly and non-toxic stabilizer systems.
- Compatibility in Clear PVC Applications: DBM is widely used in clear and transparent PVC products because it does not impart any opacity or affect the clarity of the polymer. Applications include rigid films, sheets, and bottles.
- Applications in Flexible PVC: DBM finds applications in flexible PVC formulations, such as wires, cables, and hoses, where its stabilization properties help in maintaining mechanical properties and flexibility.
